April 22, 2009Gap 1969 Denim Relaunched1969 denim has been sparse in Gap stores, but that's about to change. Earlier this week Gap, under the creative direction of Patrick Robinson, relaunched their premium denim line, debuting with the pictured pair of raw, subtly detailed jeans. Denim, as of late, has reverted back to classics, with no crazy buttons or pockets but sometimes it's hard to find a good looking pair with a great cut for a good price. Gap, thankfully, has achieves the trifecta by offering the medium-weight wash in contemporary cuts with only a simple white trim for just $60. -- SETH PLATTNER May 16, 2008GAP Artist Editions Hit Stores! While your pockets might not be deep enough to afford an original piece of art by Chuck Close or Jeff Koons, it doesn't mean that you have to live without one. Instead of a painting, get to the GAP and pick up some art you can wear—a limited edition t-shirt designed by Close, Koons or one of 11 other influential artists. Other artists include Marilyn Minter, Kiki Smith, Cai Guo-Qiang, Barbara Kruger, Ashley Bickerton, Kenny Scharf, Glenn Ligon, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Kerry James Marshall, Hanna Liden and Sarah Sze. GAP worked with the Whitney Museum of American Art and Art Production Fund to create the collection
artists, who are all previous Whitney Biennial participants. The Whitney Biennial is a special exhibition held every two years at the Whitney Museum of American Art that showcases the most important contemporary art in the United States. May 02, 2008Hedi Slimane Designing for Diesel? GAP Artist Editions! Nicole Farhi Robbed! Tom Ford Does Opera!Photo: Getty Images Ever since Hedi Slimane left the helm of Dior Homme, rumors have been flying about his next big foray into fashion. Will he return to LVMH? Is he launching his own line? Is Hedi Slimane (who was spotted in Soho last weekend by your Stylelist) collaborating with Diesel? WWD reports today that Diesel rumors might be closer to reality than good old fashioned gossip. Today's issue says, "Diesel may be preparing to launch a Red Collection to be designed by Slimane." [WWD, British Vogue] On May 13th, the GAP will roll out it's Artist Editions T-Shirts designed by contemporary artists like Chuck Close, Jeff Koons, Marilyn Minter, Kiki Smith, Cai Guo-Qiang, Barbara Kruger, Ashley Bickerton, Kenny Scharf, Glenn Ligon, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Kerry James Marshall, Hanna Liden and Sarah Sze. When did the GAP start getting creative? [WWD] Designer Nicole Farhi was robbed at knife point at her home in London. The two muggers made off with a $15,800 ring, a watch and foreign currency. [NYP] Tom Ford, superstar designer and quite possibly the sexiest man in fashion, designed the costumes for Santa Fe Opera’s production of The Letter. Ford is currently building a home in the area, so designing the clothes was the neighborly thing to do, right? [Queerty] April 25, 2008Home Laser Hair Removal! Missoni in Scotland and Kuwait! Sartorialist Does GAP! Presidential Shopping! 2nd Generation iPhone Rumors!A laser hair removal device for use at home is on the way and promises to be very exciting. The price tag, however, is less so. I'm not sure how you'd laser your own back (sounds dangerous) so you might need someone to come over and play a different game of doctor than you're used to. [WWD] Missoni will open its first hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland early next year, followed by a second in Kuwait. Wow, way to pick the hot, luxurious, travel destinations. We love Edinburgh (they have a bar called C.C. Blooms), and we haven't been to Kuwait (it's a little too close to Iraq for comfort), but those destinations aren't exactly Dubai or Saint-Tropez. [WWD] Lensman Scott Schuman (pictured), a.k.a. The Sartorialist, announced that he will appear in fall ads for the GAP. How a man that well-dressed is straight is beyond me. (Did you see the story in Fantastic Man?) Come to the dark side, Scott. [Fashionista] Which presidential candidate do your favorite mall clothiers support? Jezebel spent way too much time compiling this investigative report and we love them for it. [Jezebel] Rumors of a 2nd generation iPhone are hitting all-time highs. A memo from UK mobile phone company 02 says that the 8GB iPhone and iPod Touch have reached "End of Life." While it sounds ominous, it just means they have sold out in the U.K. and will not be replenished. [Engadget] March 21, 2008Dangerous Natural Beauty; Yohji Goes to China; Banana Republic's Sweatshop Scandal; Paula Abdul Loves Rami Kashou and ChocolateNot all natural products are good for you. A study found that many products— including Jason, Kiss My Face, Jason and Whole Foods-branded products— contained a carcinogenic byproduct called 1,4-Dioxane. Stick to munching your organic foods instead and driving your hybrid. [WWD] Yohji Yamamoto plans to follow in the high-heeled footsteps of Americas Next Top Model and Fendi by staging a fashion show in Beijing's Forbidden City next month. Fendi staged a show on the Great Wall last year and ANTM filmed a runways show in the same location as Yamamoto's show during it's 9th season. What's most awkward about the fashion show is not the lack of Tyra Banks but the politics behind the show. WWD reports, "Yamamoto is organizing the show in collaboration with the Chinese government and will use the occasion as a personal apology to the Chinese people for Japan's atrocities during its World War II invasion." Seriously. [The Cut] Banana Republic and GAP Inc. are up against more allegations of poor working conditions for the factory workers that produce clothes for the company. Banana Republic responded today saying that it will launch its own investigation into the allegations, and find lesser known factories that know better than to complain about child labor and long hours if they know what's good for them. [WWD] Paula Abdul purchased Rami Kashou's Hershey's challenge dress from Project Runway for almost $3,000 in a charity auction. She said she would probably wear it on Halloween but I wouldn't be surprised if that crazy bitch showed up on American Idol with it because it's a Tuesday. For her, every day is Halloween. [The Cut] March 17, 2008Marc Jacobs & Jason Preston Squabble; GAP Limited-Edition Collaborations; Cashmere Underwear; Gucci, Chloé and Dunhill win in Counterfeit Suit; Christian Siriano Wins BigMarc Jacobs and beau Jason Preston's relationship hit the skids last week while on vacay in Turks and Caicos. Page Six reports that the "nonstop screaming matches" got so bad that they spent time apart and eventually cut the trip short—flying home on separate planes, of course. Fighting is no fun without the makeup sex. [Page Six] Threeasfour, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Band of Outsiders, Michael Bastian and Philip Crangi will all create limited-edition collections for GAP this year, but they might be tough to find. If a designer designs a collection for GAP and nobody can find it, does it still make a splash? [Fashionista] Would you buy a $250 pair of cashmere boxer briefs? Me neither. But the girls at The Frisky were so captivated by them that they went on their own expedition into the land of pima cotton and bulges in men's underwear. [The Frisky] Gucci, Chloé and Dunhill won a $4.3 million judgment against a bag counterfeiter. Vendors on Canal St. don't bat an eyelash, they just get more creative. [WWD] Christian Siriano just might be the most successful Project Runway alum yet! WWD reports that he now has financial backers for his line, Posh Spice in his clothes, and a scheduled appearance on Ugly Betty—and W Hotels gave him a bed. His response to all this newfound success? "Fierccccce!" [The Cut] October 29, 2007Yohji Goes to China; GAP Faces Child Labor Allegations; Marc Jacobs Goes Blue; Tom Ford
Yohji Yamamoto will follow in Karl Lagerfeld's footsteps and stage a fashion show for his Y's line in China at the invitation of the Chinese government. [WWD] Is GAP using child labor to make their clothes? New allegations published by The Guardian say kids as young as ten are stitching away and the GAP launches a massive investigation. [British Vogue] Marc Jacobs catches the Halloween spirit and dyes his hair blue. Perhaps he's dressing as a smurf? [NY Mag] Is Tom Ford an environmentalist? In order to prevent any mining on his New Mexico Ranch, Ford bought the mineral rights to his 1,400 acres. [British Vogue] October 09, 2007Become a RED(HEAD) with GAP's (2 WEEKS) T-ShirtPhoto: Courtesy of GAP Madison Avenue loves to tug on the heartstrings of sympathetic shoppers and what better way to make someone feel better about purchasing a $3 bottle of water than to say it helps to bring fresh water to third-world communities? Or last year's $800 Tumi bag that benefited the amazing organization Doctors Without Borders? I'll take two! Each year (especially around the holidays), shoppers are blindsided by a tidal wave of products that support charities, but often times, it's difficult for a shopper to know exactly how much cash is reaching the charity and how much is contributing to the corporation's bottom line (all $800 from the Tumi bag sales were donated, btw). The GAP, however, wants to make it quite clear how much good a single t-shirt sale can do. The San Francisco-based brand's latest offering for (PRODUCT) RED (the Bono-sponsored initiative that has already raised $45 million for the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa through product sales including ipods, phones and clothes) is a $28 red t-shirt with "(2 WEEKS)" written across the chest. The sale of one t-shirt donates enough money to the Global Fund to purchase two weeks of HIV medication for one person in Africa. And if you forget about the meaning of (2 WEEKS) or your boyfriend steals your shirt after a slumber party at your place, there's a friendly reminder written on the inside of the shirt. Everything is better in the U.K.—including GAP ads. Instead choosing B-list celebrities like Sarah Silverman to star in the U.K. GAP ads, they get super models and better looking (read: less frumpy) clothes. [Fashionista] Pet Fashion Week hits NYC—Because your pussies and bitches deserve alligator and diamond accessories, too. [NY Post] Raf Simons, designer of Jil Sander and Raf Simons, debuts Raf by Raf Simons, a new line of youth-oriented, graphic clothes and jeans. But don't call it a diffusion line.
