Chatter: Miuccia Prada

“I don’t know why this whole idea of customers moving away from expensive brands would apply to fashion only. It should be across the board then because a sophisticated consumer buys expensive art, design and furniture. I’m really pleased that we’ve always worked much more on the product than on the brand and I think this pays back. Crisis always pushes you to do better.”

The Chanel Mobile Art Exhibit may have crashed and burned, but that's not stopping Prada! The new building in Seoul, designed by Rem Koolaaz, is called the Prada Transformer. A tetrahedron-shaped "transformative building," the architect describes it as a "dynamic and living organism" meaning, more or less, it changes shape to suit the event it's hosting. So what happens when it hosts a big gay party? Oh the possibilities... [Luxist]

Karl Lagerfeld (pictured) designed specialty coins for France's Monnai de Paris. To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the birth of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, they're issuing, among others, a solid-gold coin with a face value of 5 euros, in reference to the house's iconic N°5 fragrance. At least somebody's making money. [Hint]

Marc Jacobs and bf Lorenzo Martone are all about the PDA. They were seen making out with each other at the the celebration dinner for the re-opening of the Mango store in SoHo. Prada won't let Hermes have all the fun: the Italian label has designed their own special edition Hyundai Genesis sedan. Antonia Marras, who already designs Kenzo's women's RTW line, has now been given creative control over the label's menswear line and accessories. Marras’ promotion marks Kenzo’s first headline men’s designer in nearly a decade; the men’s collection had been in the hands of its design studio since 2001, when Roy Krejberg exited the brand. Not that we don't play dress up all year round, but the gays have a special love for Halloween. And given that it's on a Friday this year, we're going all out. Here to help us with our outfits is Screaming Mimi's, NYC's famed vintage store, which has amassed a huge collection of costumes to guarantee we look our best come October 31st. Their NYC store is located at 382 Lafayette street, but for all you out-of-towners, their online boutique is also well stocked. Happy haunting! [Screaming Mimi's]

Sports + fashion, together forever

Beckham

A new exhibition at London's Victoria and Albert Museum examines the romance between sports and fashion and its resulting street chic offspring, the tracksuit. Featuring 60 outfits, drawings, photographs, and films that showcases design elements, advertising campaigns, and fashion collections, "Fashion V Sport" reveals the ways in which sportswear has sprinted from the gym to the runway.

"More and more we are seeing fashion brands getting involved in sports like the Olympics or Wimbledon or the U.S. Open," curator Ligaya Salazar told Reuters.

The show is divided into sections entitled "Dare," "Display," "Play," "Desire," and involves designs from high end names like Prada, Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood, and Yohji Yamamoto, who have created looks for companies including Adidas, Reebok, Nike, and Puma. It also investigates the role of sports celebrities, like hunky poster boys David Beckham and Roger Federer, in popularizing fashion trends off the field.

"Fashion and sport share a long history, but close collaboration only began about 10 years ago after designers noticed ordinary people wearing sports gear outside the gym in emulation of the stars of the sports and entertainment worlds," Salazar said.

And here we were willing to give all the credit to Richard Simmons.

The exhibition runs through January 4th, 2009.
