Comme des Garcon designer Rei Kawakubo is collaborating with Japanese Vogue on a pop-up shop. It will open from the end of May until fall and is said to be like a "magazine you can walk into." Featured designers and artists to participate in the collections are Takashi Murakami, Chanel, Fendi, Loewe, Martin Margiela and Walter Van Beirendonck. [WWD] Men's stores are offering alcohol to shoppers to make them stay longer and buy stuff. Awesome. [WSJ] Common is the face of Diesel's new scent, Only the Brave. He'll perform in Spain, Los Angeles, Paris, and New York to celebrate the scent. [WWD] Two tween brothers have started their own fragrance company. Their first fragrance is a cologne they made "to smell like sunshine" so they wouldn't forget Hawaii after they moved to the mainland. Too cute to stand. [Style List] March 11, 2009Quickies: Roberto Cavalli Won't Stop, Exits at Earnest SewnRoberto Cavalli is launching his own line of pet wear. Items include a satin-trimmed bathrobe, silk printed shorts, a shearling jacket and -- get this -- a leather passport holder. [The Cut] Also -- a Roberto Cavalli dildo? Will he ever stop?! [Racked] Founders of Earnest Sewn, Scott Morrison and Eleanor Ylvisaker, are leaving the label. They will remain shareholders in the company. No specific reason has been given for their departure. [Paper] Despite the economy, Marc Jacobs will be expanding. He's just opened two stores in Bahrain, one in São Paolo, and has stores opening in London, Chicago, Hong Kong and Seoul. [WWD]
March 04, 2009Roberto Cavalli's FeteMore coming your way from the Cavalli Chronicles. As we mentioned yesterday, not only is Roberto's Just Cavalli line under water, likely not to resurface, but the designer also been slapped with a lawsuit by Ittierre -- the production and licensing company that makes Just Cavalli. Despite these woes, Cavalli still found time to throw a star-studded celebration to launch his eponymous credit card. Yes, the snake-skin one. Held at the Franco Parenti theater, Cavalli invited 300 guests to help him celebrate, one guest even exclaiming at the site of the immense amount of animal print, "I feel like I'm living in this guy's soul." Elizabeth Hurley, Sarah Ferguson, Milla Jovovich and CIS's Gary Dourdan all showed up, each worth mentioning simply for what was to be learned from them: -- A portion of every sale made with Cavalli card will benefit the charity Sarah Ferguson founded, Children in Crisis. At least there's something redeemable about a snake skin card and lavish party to celebrate it. -- Jovovich not only appeared in a special tribute video with Cavalli at the party, but she'll also appear in a viral campaign for the card again with Cavalli and..a Rolls-Royce? -- Most surprisingly is the fact that Gary Dourdan announced that he's mulling over his own apparel line because his mother was a seamstress. -- Seth Plattner March 02, 2009The Roberto Cavalli ReportIt was an eventful week last week for Mr. Cavalli, and he's not looking to be out of the press anytime soon what with all the Just Cavalli woes, lawsuits and, of course, crying. So let's break it down. We first got word that Cavalli was canceling the runway show for Just Cavalli because it hasn't been doing so well, and everyone saw this as the mega-metaphorical final blow that would smote the line. Then we learned that the line would show after all, but in a presentation rather than on the runway. Not a day later it was revealed that Ittierre, the production and licensing company that makes Just Cavalli, went bankrupt earlier in the month, prompting the JC presentation insteadof the runway show because, says Cavalli, "I can't make a show with so few pieces. I don't like to do 50 percent. For me, a fashion show is my adrenaline, my emotion. To decide not to show was, for me, very hard." Then he got all weepy. Che triste! (but, he did remind us that he has, like, a million Facebook friends and they make him happy.) Now, in the most recent development, it's being reported that Ittierre is suing Cavalli for all the trash talk! Cavalli claimed dissatisfaction with the production quality of the line and now Ittierre is firing back saying that his decision to cancel the show was "unilateral" and "unjustified with serious prejudice to Ittierre's image." We love that this is so junior high, but having someone as famous as Roberto Cavalli slam you worldwide would get us all "hold up, bitch" too. Ittierre operates licenses for a lot of other labels like C'N'C Costume National and John Galliano, so having a bad word against them could hurt their credibility in the eyes of other brands. Still, Cavalli continued his denouncement of the company, noting that his contract expires in two season so he practically already has "a foot outside" and that the contract, as far has he is concerned, "has expired." He also noted that he's tried to end the contract before, since Ittierre didn't pay him the $25.3 million owed in royalties. So here is where this fashion season's battle royale stands thus far. Our breath remains bated as we continue to see how this plays out, because not one but two necks are on the line and it would just be a pity to see everyone come crashing down, zebra-print and sequenced pieces lying in ruin. -- Seth Plattner February 26, 2009Quickies: Just Cavalli will go on, Annie Leibovitz mortgages her art for money and more
Apparently the 90s are the new 80s. Didn't we already go through this with leg-warmers and off the shoulder looks a few years ago? Enough! [The Moment] Rolex anyone? One of the greatest collections of Rolex watches -- gathered since 1984 -- will be sold off in Milan on Mach 22nd by Geneva-based auction house Patrizzi & Co. The sale will be previewed in New York and U.S. buyers can bid online during the actual auction. Pieces range from $50,000 to $225,000. We're guessing Annie Leibovitz won't be in on the bidding. Simon Doonan interviewed Dame Edna for her new MAC cosmetics line. How the world did not implode at the clash of these titans, we'll never know. [Racked] First a nightclub, and now Roberto Cavalli is debuting his own credit card. And what makes it so special, you ask? It's covered in snake skin. [Luxist] The Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation awarded L.A. brand Corpus their annual $25,000 top prize for menswear. With the money the label will be able to present at New York Fashion Week. Better there than a slot in L.A.'s quickly disintegrating schedule. [Ecco Domani] via [Material Interest] (Supposedly) Opening for Business: NYC's fabled Topshop in March. We'll believe it when we see it. -- SETH PLATTNER December 17, 2008Quickies: Fashion Week takes another hit, Roberto Cavalli opens a nightclub and more
Roberto Cavalli opened his first nightclub in Florence. It's gawdy goodness (pictured) and will likely be overrun with homos in no time. [WWD] Marc Jacobs skipped out on the Christmas party this year, but his boyfriend didn't. Lorenzo Martone, a strategic planner for boutique ad agency Chandelier Creative, threw a “Recessionista Christmas Extravaganza," featuring a gospel choir, shirtless Santa Claus, a fortune teller and case upon case of Champagne. We're glad to see someone is enjoying themselves despite the economy. [WWD] The V Man model finalists were announced. Yes -- they're cute. But will they ever be our Petey Wright? No. Never. [Towleroad] Louis Vuitton has some weird obsession with Easter Island. If you got their Christmas card (we didn't), you'll notice the row of "moai" statues on the front, which further illustrates the link between the French luxury goods firm and the remote Polynesian heritage site. They're starting a fund to help development on the island, and word has it that one of the giant statues will be put in the Tuileries for a fund-raiser they're having for the island. [WWD] Smell this: Hugo Boss will launch Hugo Element in 2009 targeted at a younger consumer. Jonathan Rhys Meyer will be the face of the label. [Cosmetic News] -- SETH PLATTNER December 01, 2008Quickies: Roberto Cavalli cleared of charges, Karl and Britney (!) and more
Karl Lagerfeld loves Britney for her art. He presented her with the German Bambi Pop International Award. We don't know what that is, but just seeing Karl Lagerfeld and Britney spears together on stage was like a wet dream. [Fashionista] ATTENTION: Paul Smith bespoke suits being made in Manhattan through Thursday. The Paul Smith suiting team has holed up in the Paul Smith NYC Greene street store for only the second time ever to hand make suits for patrons who've got at least $5,000 to spend. Let us know how that goes, yeah? [WWD] An employee at a Long Island Wal-Mart was trampled to death by shoppers on Black Friday. The New York Times calls it "a sign of consumer desperation amid a bleak economy." [NYT] November 12, 2008Quickies: Madonna for Vuitton? Bruno does gay porn and more
Just Gaston -- ya know, Miley Cyrus' BF? -- just landed the Just Cavalli underwear campaign. And we can't wait, to see him again. [Just Jared] Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno continues his rampage, this time in the gay porn industry. He auditioned two big name stars, Tony Capucci and Tyler Saint, to help him orchestrate an orgy that Bruno watches and the results are said to be hi-larious. [Towleroad] Every man needs a perfect white button down. Thanks to Thomas Pink and their new white shirt bar in the Madison Avenue store, yours will fit just right. [Material Interest] We're broke, you're broke, everyone is broke -- so get some shoes that will last. Canvas is durable and timelessly fashionable. [The Upgrader] -- SETH PLATTNER |
