YSL Redux

Ysl-tomek-man-4.jpg

In the most recent edition of Man About Town, model Tomek Szczukiecki channels the late master Yves Saint Laurent in a spread shot by Camilla Akran. In the 'esprit' of YSL, the fashion is chic and enviable, the dark frames impeccable, and the gaze haunting. Another reminder of YSL's genius was hardly needed, and yet...

Quickies: YSL's art auction exceeds expectations, designers selling runway show seats? and more

YSL's art collection went up for auction yesterday in Paris. The collection has already reached a bid of 206 million euros -- the most expensive ever auctioned -- and still has 2 days left. We're biding our time so that we can swoop in right at the end, eBay style. [AFP]

Should designers sell tickets to their runway shows? Turns out gobs of people would pay $160 or more to go to a show, but designers think it would be confusing to consumers because of the delay in seasons. Is it elitist and wrong  that we just don't want to be sitting next to Sally Anne from somewhere in the Bible Belt as she exclaims "Look at how it sparkles under them there lights!" [Racked]

Could the Style Network's Running in Heels actually be worth watching? The New York Times thinks so. Apparently there's enough crying and bitchiness and Nina Garcia in the first episode to keep viewers interested in the whole season. [Heard on the Runway]

Richard Chai is now available at Den. If you saw his most recent runway collection, any New Yorker with a spare hour should be heading there now to snatch up the goods. [Refinery 29]

Speaking of the men's shows in Paris. Here they are!

For the third year in a row YSL creative director Stefano Pilati released a short film with his new menswear collection. No clothes are shown -- just close up of actors faces. We'll pretend we get it. [Material Interest]

Guy Trebay at the New York Times DID NOT have fun in Milan. While black makes up like, 90% of our wardrobe, he felt all the dark colors coming down the runway were far too gloomy. Well, hey, look around. [NYT]

Adam Senn from MTV's The City is actually a working model. He walked the D&G show in Milan. Does this give the show any more validity in the real world? No. Absolutely not. [Fabsugar

Quickies: Hedi Slimane shoots YSL, Marc Jacobs cancels his after party and more

Hedislimaneshootstheyvessaintlauren Hedi Slimane shot Yves Saint Laurent's home in honor of the relaunch of YSL Rive Gauche Homme. A poignant and touching tribute, yes, but could he also be establishing roots with the fashion house for a future team-up? [SLAMXHYPE]

Tipsters are saying Marc Jacobs is canceling his after-show-party during Fashion Week. Is there no justice -- or merriment -- to be had in this cold, sad world? [Fashionista]

Amid economic turmoil, The French are getting queasy
. With Paris being seen as the epitome of luxury, high end retailers are suggesting the unthinkable -- slashing prices! Karl Lagerfeld sounds off as well. [NYT]

ELLE just signed on with Creative Arts Management. The celebrity management group was brought on in hopes of expanding ventures into TV and film for the magazine. A good sign for the second season of Stylista? [Variety]

The Chanel Mobile Art Exhibit may have crashed and burned, but that's not stopping Prada! The new building in Seoul, designed by Rem Koolaaz, is called the Prada Transformer. A tetrahedron-shaped "transformative building," the architect describes it as a "dynamic and living organism" meaning, more or less, it changes shape to suit the event it's hosting. So what happens when it hosts a big gay party? Oh the possibilities... [Luxist]

Stafano Pilati will launch his first unisex collection for YSL next month.
It includes a men's and women's line and the suits were inspired by the iconic Le Smoking look St. Laurent introduced in the 60s. Two Times of London reporters got to try the goods on. And we hate them [Time UK]

In other London news, citizens who overdress their pets could face legal action.
We're all for a cute jumper or raincoat on our four-pawed-pal, but when it comes to dresses and pearls, we're glad someone is laying down some sort of law. [Racked]

Apparently certain colleges have "Chuck Bass Fridays." Says show stylist Eric Daman: "Bass goes beyond my personal style, I wish I had the money and youth to carry off his looks. It’s just un rêve [a dream] to dress a womanizing straight boy in such dandy apparel. I’ve read blogs from different colleges that actually have Chuck Bass Fridays. There is a whole movement behind him and his wardrobe which is sooo gratifying because, lets face it, men really should dress better. There is no one favorite look, I just try to keep him up to par each episode, which is no easy task." So, otherwise slovenly frat boys dapper themselves up to emulate the Gossip Girl bad boy? No more polo shirts, popped collars and baggy jeans? Gossip Girl really is a Godsend! [A Shaded View]

Chatter: Pierre Bergé

"I never thought that fashion was an art -- not at all, but I think it requires an artist to do fashion."

Quickies: Michael Phelps Sports Illustrated Cover, Tom Ford does soap on a rope, and more

1208_large Dear God what happened to Michael Phelp's face on the cover of Sports Illustrated? Yowzers! [SI.com]

Tom Ford makes soap on a rope.
It's $18, smells like his fragrance Tom Ford Man, and, yes, we're sure he'd be fine with you re-enacting a prison shower scene with it (check out the version he staged for Out for inspiration). [Haute Concept]

The Harry Winston boutique in Paris was robbed of $100 million worth of jewelry. The two men disguised as women were in and out in 15 minutes and are suspected to have been connected to someone inside. They knew secret hiding places for expensive jewels and called employees by name. It turns out this kind of stuff does actually happen outside of an Ocean's Eleven movie. [CNN]

New Yorkers, listen up: everyone's favorite vintage store, Housing Works, is selling vintage YSL. They’re hosting a cocktail party on Thursday, December 11th at their 23rd Street store featuring over 500 pieces of Yves Saint Laurent for purchase. So sip a cocktail and blow some cash. [Fashionista]

The RNC actually spent $180,000 on the Palin family wardrobe. Money well spent as far as we're concerned. [Politico]

As her contract runs out, rumors are abound that Anna Wintour is mulling over retirement.
At 59 years old and with a magazine in decline, we love you Anna, but we'll love you even more if you bow out gracefully. [NYP]

Not only is Madonna appearing in the new Louis Vuitton ad campaigns, but she's get $10 million for it. With an upcoming divorce settlement in the works, she'll need a bit of cushion. [NYP]
